Chess is an old two-player strategy game that involves a checkered playing mat and pieces with specific rulesets. Each piece takes on the shape of a specific figure, such as a pawn, knight, or rook, and on. Usually, the game is divided into two sides: white and black. The main objective is to 'checkmate' the opponent by putting their king in a position where it cannot escape 'capture'.
Its origins come from an ancient Indian game called Chaturanga, whose own origin is left to much debate. When it eventually reached Persia, the game was modified into a familiar form that we know today. It of course continued to evolve and spread its reach as the ages of war and conquest continued, and with the spoils of war came chess.
The game was incredibly popular in the Middle Ages especially in Europe where it continued evolve. Even around the 15th century the game saw tournament play charismatic players. Today, chess is still enjoyed by millions around the world and is often depicted as a game of intellect or high prestige.
